FLAX 405: Mallon to Mizen
The mission: To create flax cord, rope, and linen that symbolically weave together our shared past, present, and future.
405 km = winding distance between Mallon Linen and Mizen Head.
The Flax 405 project is bringing together communities across the island of Ireland. It was dreamt up by the amazing Kathy Kirwan, the self confessed Clonakilty flax nut. With the support of Fibreshed Ireland we want to involve as many people as possible in making a single flax rope.
Making cord is one of the simplest ways that we can use flax. It takes just a little mastering but quickly becomes muscle memory, meditative.
To make it easy to join the project we are offering a little kit, it contains 100g of scutched flax fibre, grown on our farm in County Tyrone, retted and scutched on site. It has a guide on how to make cordage beautifully drawn up by Malú at Fibreshed Ireland.
We are offering individual boxes with 100g of flax or community boxes with 1kg of flax. Your purchase of this box will be donated to an organisation supporting marginalised communities.
If you want to buy a box for yourself you can do that here.
