The Mallon Linen Field to Fabric Box
We designed the Field to Fabric box to tell the story of transforming the flax plant into linen.
The Field to Fabric box contains:
- 80g – 100g of each type of our regeneratively grown flax fibre; rough tow, good tow, scutched and hackled fine line, all grown and processed here on Mallon Farm in Northern Ireland. We harvest the flax by hand, before tank retting it in rain water. Our restored 1940’s Mackies scutching turbine is the next stage in processing; it breaks the dried stems and then removes the outer parts of the flax plant, leaving the long fibres. We hackle the fine line fibre by hand.
Restored scutching turbine - 10m of linen yarn, hand spun by Charlie using a drop spindle and our own flax fibre
- A piece of linen woven from flax grown in Ireland many years ago. The yarn was spun at the now closed Sinton’s Mill in Tandragee and woven by Flaxmill Textiles in Dungiven.
- A factsheet detailing the stages and methods of transforming flax into linen. The four page factsheet tells of how we sow, grow, harvest, ret and process our flax. It describes some of the uses for each type of fibre. In addition, we’ve included some recommendations for further reading and research into natural fibres.
Box measures: 30cm x 22cm x 10cm
